Now that the rains are gone.

Water levels are a bit high for this time of year but with the 14 day forecast dry things will settle into summer lows quickly. A variety of patterns are currently working. Knowing where the fish are is key to having a successful day. I have September and October dates available.

Summer stuff

Summer is here, early morning starts and ultra humid days are among us. Fishing has been consistently good, the fish aren’t jumping in the boat but a solid effort all day we’re getting good numbers in the net. A verity of patterns have been working and every day is different. Being on the same water everyday is a must to stay connected to the fishery. We’ve got some rain in the forecast which is a good thing but not as much as they’re calling for. We’ll see what happens.

Settling into summer slowly

Things are slowly getting back to normal after the last rains that we had. The river shot up over last weekend and the water temps dropped about 10 degrees. With the heat up forecast and no rain in the near future fishing is picking up daily.

Stuck in a rut

The local rivers seem to be stuck in a weather rut which is keeping the water conditions stay the same. The Kankakee remains high and very stained while the dupage is extremely low and clear.
I’ve been opting to go the low and clear route the last couple weeks which has been paying off daily. Fishing in low and clear water make the bass EXTREMELY spooky. This is some of the most technical bass fishing around. A long stealthy cast is a must.
The spawn is in all stages on the river. Females on beds, males on beds, and empty beds are being seen more and more. Once again leave bedding fish alone it doesn’t make you a good fisherman by catching them.

Some are clear some are dirty

Because I’m tired but I’ve been meaning to do a report. The dupage is super low and crystal clear, the river is loaded with bedding fish. The top water bite has been awesome. Leave the beds alone! Don’t think to yourself if you fish to a bedding fish so you can post a selfie you’re some superstar fisherman. It really doesn’t! Leave them alone!
The kank is higher and dirty with about 5 inches of visibility the streamer game is strong. I have a few July dates open.

Busy busy busy

We are well underway. The river is super low already considering it’s only April. Water temps are all over the place which is making the fish very unhappy. The fish that we’re getting in the net have absolutely huge bellies, the big girls are definitely stocking up to do their thing. I say this in every post, I have VERY limited dates through the end of July and late summer dates are filling quick. Do not wait to get your dates locked down.

Just about go time

As I type this I have my toes in the sand in warm sw Florida. The weather at home is 39 as a high. I’ve been keeping a eye on the river conditions from the beach. By the time I get home to a full calendar the flows and water temps will be absolutely perfect for a full calendar and full nets every day. Before I left town I was able to sneak a couple trips in and as always fish found their way to the boat. This is shaping up to be a extremely busy summer. If you’re waiting to grab a date it might be too late.

Pumpin the brakes

Well this week Mother Nature says wooooooah pump the brakes a bit. The water temps have dropped back well into the low 40’s and with a 1 1/2 of rain coming in the next 48 hours it’s looking questionable for rest of the week and the weekend. Fishing was consistent and quite good last week. Get your summer date booked while there are dates available.

And just like that, it’s time.

Unpacked from Arkansas, annual paperwork is done, it’s time to smallmouth fish. The first trip of the season has been run and man it was a good one. We started the day with low 40 degree water and end close to 50. The water had moderate flow and was dirty. Don’t let BS that you hear on the inter web, where everyone with a uneducated opinion has a voice. Smallmouth do eat flies in high dirty water I can assure you. I have a select few spring dates left and summer days are going quick.

Arkansas is over and it’s almost smallmouth time.

The tail end of the Arkansas season was tough to say the least. A lot of missed fish and low water is how we ended it. Thanks to everyone who came down and fished, I’m looking forward to 2022 winter.
On the home smallmouth front things are looking to get going sooner than thought. The rivers are receding after the snows runoff and water temps are climbing fast. I’ll be starting to poke around early next week. I have very few spring dates left and summer dates are filling quickly.
