That’s a wrap for my 2019 spring season I’m off to the last frontier, my tent and jetboat await. With heavy pressure on the river and extreme heat fishing this past week has been tough. Smaller baitfish patterns and top water did the trick. I will try and post from Alaska as much as I can. See you all in September.

The dog days of summer are here to stay. Starting the days early have been key to this week's success. The mid day heat isn't enjoyable for anyone. Finally the long awaited top water bite on the Kankakee has started. I am currently booking for September and October. If you've missed the spring and summer dates don't wait to get a day for the fall bite.

Being flexible this past week has been important. Dodging storms to find the cleanest water has be key to the past weeks success. Finally the fish are looking up and eating top water on a consistent basis. Deer hair patterns have been best. It’s berry season and the carp have keyed into it. As always in dealing with carp stealth is key.

I lied, I’ll be honest. In a email I sent out I said the spawn was over, it isn’t (unfortantly) However it hasn’t mattered we’ve been getting stupid big fish this past week. The Kank is back fishing well. The only negative that I have to report is that the top water bite still hasn’t started.

We’ve been the only guide service working the local water ways this week. While other guides are rescheduling for one reason or another we’ve been rewarded for playing in high dirty water. I guess knowing when to fish or not comes with experience. The Dupage has been pumping out some great fish while the Kankakee is coming down and will be back fishable tomorrow. Being flexible in your fly selection has been the key to success.

Ugh, more of the same. We just can’t seem to get out of this weather pattern. With all of this high water this spring I’ve spent a lot of tie at the tying bench. The outcome of the hours spent have been some great new patterns that swim great and catch fish. The world of tying is going big, articulated, and did I say BIG. Why not? When you look at conventional lures, mostly soft plastics they’re 2-4 inches. Which leads me to my current tying mindset, if a river smallmouth can and will eat a 4” plastic craw why not tie big? Choose your materials carefully in order to keep the weight of the fly down for casting purposes and go BIG the fish will eat it.

Boat ramps aren’t meant to be fished from. Boat ramps aren’t meant to be used as a dumping ground for your landscaping waste. Boat ramps are meant to launch and remove boats from the water. If by chance you’re too lazy to walk away from your car to find a fishing spot and you choose to fish from the ramp, GET OUT OF THE WAY when a boat comes up to it, so said boat can either launch or be put back on the trailer!

Yes, we’ve had a ton of rain. Yes, the rivers have been trashed. Yes, the water is dirty. Yes, you might get rained on. You have rain gear bought on pro deal, so use it. Conditions like this highlight the differences between guides and insta guides. I have news for you the water gets dirty, the water gets high, the fish live in it. They will eat.

Finally the waters have receded and we’re back fishing. The fish are on the spawn, so that means you have to work for them throughout the day. Staying in the zone is key. Crayfish have been the preferred pattern this past week.

Things on all of the local rivers are almost back to normal. Levels continue to drop daily and should be fishable by this coming weekend. The pictures below are at 36,600 cfs. The blown out river gave me the chance to spend the weekend at the fields watching my daughters team win the 5 game tournament.
