Going strong

The river is fishing good. The streamer bite is on fire and the top water game is starting. The spawn is happening, we're about a week and a half into it, despite that plenty of nice aggressive fish are being hooked. Working neutral buoyancy streamers has been the key to success with the floating algae thats in the system. Hopefully this rain gives the river a good flush. Scattered dates for June are still available.

Busy busy busy

It's been a bit since the last report. I've been on the water every day and this is last on my list of things to do so heres a quick report. The water temps are low to mid 60's, great visibility, surprisingly theres a lot of grass already growing. The bite has switched from low and slow to swimming and crushing it. It's almost spawning time, its time for my annual talk. I do NOT anchor and fish spawning fish I do NOT anchor and fish beds. The boat is always moving and we're looking for the aggressive fish that wants to eat. You guys that target fish in the creeks or in the backwaters are hurting the future of the river.

Fatties

We had another good week on the river. The weather was good for a change and the big girls of spring came to play. The below pictures prove now is the time to get out and fish. Water temps stayed in the upper 40's to mid 50's all week. A variety of patterns caught fish, from leeches to baitfish. Water clarity improved greatly to almost a foot.

Gettin after it

I promise no complaining about the weather in this report. River flows on the Kank are stable in the 8000 cfs range, temps are staying in the mid 40's, and the clarity varies day to day. The smallies are starting to chase streamers, which is a nice change from the low and slow program. I think mid week we'll finally be in normal spring conditions for good.

Same ole same ole

This is really getting old. We've had another week of hot and cold weather, with a little rain mixed in. Most of my week was taken up with family duties but Bob had a good day on the river before the water bumped up and got dirty. Just a few months and I'll be on a plane heading back to the Naknek. I still have a few spots open. The bead boxes and ziplocks have been restocked.

Hot and Cold

Pick one, PLEASE!!! Mother nature really needs to make her mind up. It's been a....... Good week I'd say. Our annual guide float produced some nice fish, customer trips have started. The river has flat lined at 8000ish cfs and is perfect, water temps vary from low 40's to high 40's. Dark color flies have been the most productive although baitfish have been eaten. All flies have been fished on Scientific Titan taper clear tip intermediate lines or Titian taper sink 3 sink 5. Long slow strips have been money. The weather is going to warm this week. Lets get after it.

Slowly but slowly

Slowly but slowly spring is creeping in, The river are in great shape I've spent days on both already this season. The water clarity is good on both, flows are perfect, but we are missing the temps by a few degrees. The sunny days have been best. Black leeches have been the winning pattern. When fishing leeches it's not always a low and slow game. We've had fish fish chase leech flies back to the boat. Hopefully I'll have some pike news to report next time, now the water has dropped and the temps are still cold enough they should be laid up and active.

I think it's over

I think it's over. The weather is breaking, the snow is gone, the birds are starting to chirp. February 27th was the first float of the 2018 year. With the Kankakee at all time high water levels the Dupage river is where my season will start this year. White baitfish patterns moved all of our fish on the 27th. I have limited openings for early season prespawn fishing. Tying classes come to a end tonight at Dupage Flyfishing Company, I want to thank everyone that attended classes this winter and sat around the tables with me. It was my pleasure teaching all of you. Due to some difficult circumstances there are now 3 open spots to join me at Naknek River camp September 1-8 If Alaska is on your bucket list this is a great opportunity.

Streamerlove Fest follow up

This past weekend with the Stealthcraft in tow I was headed southbound to Arkansas for a mid winter escape. The plan was to strip streamers on the White river for big browns and I was invited to tie at Dally's streamer love fest event. The river produced plenty of fish everyday and the event was one hell of a good time. Here's a writeup from Steve Dally about the event https://ozarkflyfisherjournal.wordpress.com/2018/01/29/streamer-lovefest-2018-thank-you/

Tying classes resume at Dupage flyfishing company this Wednesday night call the shop to lock your spot down (630) 857-3468 Bookings have started filling the calendar for the 2018 season prime dates are being taken quickly don't wait to long to contact me. On a fishing note pike fishing should start soon the ice on the river has broken up we just need the temps to rise a little bit before it starts.
